Yesterday, I had the pleasure of speaking on global warming and CO2 regulation to a group of eighth graders — a change of pace from my usual speaking engagements. Prior to my visit, the class wrote papers on whether man-made global warming is occurring. Half the class was assigned the pro-MMGW argument and half the con. Afterward, the class debated the issue.
This balanced look at climate change, along with a rational debate, is what is missing in today’s global warming hysteria. Where’s the debate? Where is the acknowledgement of the anti-alarmists’ arguments? Why does research funding flow overwhelmingly to those connecting you-name-it to anthropogenic global warming? Do universities perform exhaustive studies before making carbon-neutral commitments or mandating that their dorms “go green?” Were there full, open, and honest debates before state legislatures passed renewable portfolio mandates? And what about the foolhardy rush to pass federal climate legislation? Will all sides be considered before we tax our nation to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars? Or will we treat the CO2 issue like the ethanol issue and make a rash decision that, within a matter of months, turns out to be a complete bust? Stay tuned.
In the meantime, if our elected representatives want a crash course in how to tackle an issue in the right way — how to avoid making an ill-informed decision that will harm all of us — I know a Central Texas middle school they can visit to find out how it's done.
