I admit it. I frequent social networking sites like Digg.com and Reddit.com.
There’s something about sites that have constantly updated information
that’s a draw for me. Over the weekend, there was an article on Reddit
called “does the internet stop people from taking real action because
there too busy talking about taking action”. In a word, yes. I
completely agree with that statement.
While traversing the web, I often find the liberal point-of-view to
be the dominating force of discussion. There are the Bush-haters, the
Cheney-haters, the Al-Gore-got-robbed-in-the-2000-election conspiracy
nuts, the blame-Bush-for-a-fascist-America people and the
environmentalists. And these children and grandchildren of the Sixties
flower power generation are mostly content with their lives except they
like to point out how they would run the country if enabled. The only
problem is that they’re all talk and no action.
According to this Wikipedia article, only 7% of the world’s energy consumed in 2004 was from renewable sources. In a Gallup poll taken in 2004,
51% of respondents said they believed that global warming had already
begun. Just to give the benefit of the doubt, let’s say all 7% of the
renewable energy consumed in 2004 was by the 51% who believed global
warming had already begun in 2004. That still leaves a lot of power
being used by environmentalists who believe global warming is happening.
So there are a bunch of whiny global warming folks out there that
have their computers revved up just to get on the internet and complain
about global warming. While this behavior is typical of the
left-leaning environmentalists, like the jet-setting liberals who fly
their personal jets instead of flying commercial, you can really dive
into this issue to see how much energy is really being wasted by these
self-identified environmentalists. There’s the power to the computer,
the power to the router and/or modem, the power at the
dial-up/cable/DSL facility, the power used to run the
dial-up/cable/DSL’s routers and switches, the power used to run the
switches and routers at various hops along the way to the destination,
and the power used to run the routers, switches, servers, backup drives
and climate control at the destination web page.
Seems like an awful
lot of power is used just to get on the internet to tout your concerns
about global warming. How about this, as one commenter on Digg.com
recently posted: just turn off your computer. The armchair
environmentalists are no better than the jet-setting greenies. They
bemoan the coming crisis all because of anthropogenic global warming,
but do little to contribute to their cause. They are the dictators and
it’s the skeptics of global warming that are the true targets. If I
suddenly believe in global warming like all the rest, can I emit as
much carbon as the rest of the original believers? And will they still
respect me in the morning? Source
