Why not spend $700 billion for solar, for efficiency, for conservation? Why not?

California Attorney General Jerry Brown, speaking at the West Coast Green conference, alluding to the $700 billion bailout package being negotiated in Washington, D.C.

Brown's speech preceded Al Gore's, who also said the climate crisis should get the 'same type of attention and money from Washington that the financial meltdown is getting.' Obama has made it clear that there will be a place at the table for Gore if he's elected president.

Of course it is smart to invest in sources of energy that will cut our
dependence on foreign oil. Renewable energy and fuels will put Americans to work
instead of transferring massive sums of our wealth to foreign countries, many of
which do not wish us well

First of all, an investment is something that is supposed to have a future
payoff, not something that is a never ending expense.

Second, the question
that should be asked is "Why spend billions or trillions on experimental
technologies over existing answers that work?"

I'm sure someday we will
have better alternative energy sources -- something that works when the sun
doesn't shine or when the wind doesn't blow. And that someday is when we should
start spending more money on those technologies. We can't just throw a bunch of
money at a problem and assume we'll find a solution any faster.
