Page 2 of 2 Obviously what MSNBC did was run the 3°C through the standard formula "To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 1.8 and add 32 degrees.". Sorry, it doesn't work that way. Lets try that again. "During the past 40 years the average summer temperatures in this region of the north-east Peninsula has been 2.2°C." (from ScienceDaily). So lets take 3C as the current summer temperature and say it was 0°C 50 years ago. Using the current summer temperature (3°C x 1.8)+32=37.4°F verses 50 years ago (0°C x 1.8)+32=32°F for a difference of (drum roll please) 5.4°F. Quite a difference from the 37°F in the MSNBC article. No wonder the public panics about global warming! Remember this warming occurred just on the Antarctic Peninsula, not over the entire Antarctic. It is a regional phenomena caused by a shift in ocean currents. There is no proof that this one isolated area of warming is due to global warming or global climate change. Overall sea ice has also increased over the Antarctic. Here is the data from The National Snow and Ice Data Center (visit them to run the numbers yourself)
