the whistleblower?
If it was indeed an insider whistleblower, Jones, Briffa, Kelly, and some others could be crossed off of this CRU staff list, but who knows what lurks in the hearts of the others?
Hmmm, I’d put my money on Mr. Mike Salmon, just because he’s the IT guy. But, if it’s hard to get in contact with Salmon to inquire about this matter, it’s probably because he’s being water-boarded by Jones and Briffa.
Or, perhaps it is Mr. Ian (Harry) Harris whose duties among other things is, wait for it – “data manipulation”! (Hat tip to eagle-eyed commenter, JasonR)
If the leaker/whistleblower is one of the CRU staff members listed below, it seems that they may enjoy protection under the UK’s Public Interest Disclosure Act of 1998, which was enacted to protect whistleblowers.

As for leaker / whistleblower, unless I'm mistaken the CRU mail was HACKED, which would be illegal, therefore making the person who did it a CRIMINAL.
Having known Mike Salmon for quite a few years in the 90's I'd say the above email was evidence of his sense of humour and nothing else.
William M. Conneley, realclimate member and Wiki admin, has managed to keep all content of the e-mails off of the wiki stub on this scandle simply by insisting that they are stolen papers. The New York times for a while was able to keep the content of the e-mails off of their website by insisting that they were stolen. There is a lot of reason to insist the there was a hack. But so far there is absolutely no evidence. Almost all evidence at this point in time points to a leak.
If its a leak then everything is protected under the UK's whistle blower law no sympathetic news organization would have any excuse not to publish the content of the e-mails and all e-mails could be used against the CRU and these scientist in a court of law, for oh I don't know conspiring to violate FOIA law.
Besides, Briffa was recently called into question about neglecting incident data that Briffa used to reconstruct "Hockey Stick;" Briffa's reconstruction of Hockey Stick had a lot of doubt thrown at it because he seemed to use only data that supported his claim. "Contrarians" were after Briffa to explain himself; Briffa hasn't been able to explain himself because of his illness. Briffa isn't going to hand anything over to "deniers" to support any kind of "case" they may have against East Anglia U or anybody else.
I think the public dissemination of the material was almost certainly an inside job, if for no other reason than other climate research units have not reported unauthorized attempts to breach data or firewall security, nor for that matter East Anglia itself: it is impossible that a hacker could try "once" to breach East Anglia firewall security and be successful and not give themselves away by previous hack attempts and not to have repeatedly tried to do it elsewhere, either.
All staff associated with the East Anglia CRU are not listed in the above summary, and my general intuition suggests to me who the insider might be and who is not listed above, and it's just a guess on my part and that's all I can say
Thomas Kuhn, in his ground-breaking book, "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions," addressed the issue wherein "practitioners of normal science," tend be protective, defensive and will even mock skeptics - - even when a multitude of anomalies begin to go against the real or imagined consensus of scientists.
Eventually, as anomalies continue to increase, a few bold scientists ultimately postulate an alternative theory that better explains the phenomenon...that's when a revolution or paradigm shift
The Theory of Evolution has more holes in it than Swiss Cheese; Climate Change alarmists have no credible proof that man is causing a dangerous rise in Co2. Temperatures have fluctuated and shifted for centuries; so have human theories
The shouted peak oil, shouted irreversible global warming, rising seas, peak food production, over consumption, peak population which had a huge adverse effect on the global population. Now the head of the IPCC has conceded that AGW may not be all what is cracked up to be so he wants us all to focus now on "Over Consumption", the replacement apparently for the fake AGW.
But again no real science, just this perception that the population is gouging away at the earth and will self destruct shortly. No science, just ideology.
Briffa was not just accused of cherry-picking and data-fudging, he's guilty of it. I doubt he's the one to fall on his sword.
